Event Details

It seems technology is everywhere.  Students are carrying cell-phones, video games, MP3 players and more.  How can teachers use technology to enrich the learning environment?  This workshop will give teachers the tools to integrate computer programming with Scratch into any grade 3-8 math or science curriculum.  Participants will receive hands-on training of Portland Wiz Kids' Scratch curriculum which will empower them to teach math and science using technology.  In addition, you will leave with a Scratch teacher's handbook with 8 reproduceable lessons to be used in your math and science class, immediately.

Programming teaches critical skills: logical reasoning, developing ideas, and sustained focus.  The concepts integrated into SCRATCH include: sequencing, iteration, conditional statements, variables, and much more.  Participants will learn how to teach fluency in digital technology while meeting their subject matter objectives quicker and easier.

In order for students to be fluent in a language they must be able to speak, read, and write in that language.  So too must students in the 21st century be able to write programs for the technology they use.  As students create with SCRATCH, they learn scientific concepts such as problem finding and solving, in a meaningful and motivating way.  In math or science class, a student will learn about the scientific inquiry process, without any way to connect it to their lives.  But when they test their creation in SCRATCH, they can immediately use the concept of sensing and feedback in a meaningful design context.  Students can make changes to their program and immediately see how it impacts their solution.

Scratch in the classroom has been proven to engage even the most difficult student, whille allowing those with high abilities to shine. Join us for our first Making Math and Science Fun! for innovative tools to inspire your students.

What you will receive:

  • 4 hours of hands-on training in Scratch programming language
  • 1 teacher's manual for integrating into a math or science curriculum
  • 8 reproduceable lessons for use in class immediately
  • Innovative Technology Education Training developed by MIT Media Lab's Lifelong Kindergarden Group

Lunch will be provided!
